Purina Farms

St. Louis is an amazing place for families--we've been here almost a year and a half and we've barely scratched the surface of all the fun things to do with kids (almost all of which are free!). Purina Farms is owned by, get this, Purina (the dog food company); it's the site of apparently one of the top competitive dog arenas, both show dogs and sport dogs, in the country. As if that weren't cool enough, they also have a little petting zoo and a twice-daily sporting dog talent show of sorts.

It is a bit of a drive from our house since it's out in the country (something like 45 minutes or an hour), so when the opportunity came up for me to do a secret shopper visit at the nearby hotel, we decided to make a weekend of it. Free hotel room, free breakfast, free (indoor!) pool time, and free zoo/dog show added up to be a fun little last-minute vacation.

For dinner that night, we found an awesome little down-home diner in Washington, Missouri. Scott & I each got a plate piled with like 4 different fried delicacies for something like 8 bucks. AMERICA!

This is Luke rather vocally requesting (/demanding) that we read his
book.

First time in a booster seat (rather than a high chair). Such a big little
boy!

Luke's favorite thing at Purina Farms, bar none, was a bin of corn kernels with some toy tractors. He spent the better part of a half hour playing there. We literally had to drag him off to see the animals.

"Chrah! Bee wheew! Bee cooo! Bbbbbb." (Translation: "Tractor! With
big wheels! And a big scoop! Vroom.")

For the record, Luke is wearing his favorite shirt in the world. Every
time he sees it in his closet (or in the dirty laundry) he demands to
wear it. ("Sriiiiii!" --"Stripes!") Something like 2/3 of his shirts are
striped, but apparently this faded, stretched-out hand-me-down is the
coolest one.

Luke does not own any toy tractors. Perhaps Santa
will have to remedy this.

Luke got to feed the sheep (with the help of one of
the employees). He laughed and said that the sheep
kissed him. I was just glad that he still had all five
digits.

Yes, those are two sleepy little piggies who love to have their ears
scratched. And a remarkably friendly chicken that likes to be chased
around the bench. (I sat down next to the pigs to pat their little bums,
and the chicken climbed up into my lap, hunkered down, and pecked
gently at my shirt until I started scratching her instead of the pigs.)

Luke also got to pet a cow, goats, bunnies, dogs, cats, and an amorous horse. Last stop of the day was the dog show. By this point Luke was way past naptime and barely holding on to this side of a meltdown, so we busted out the binky while he watched the show.

He was really cutting a rug to the show music! One of these days I will actually capture it on video. Below, he's too busy stealing the orange I'm in the middle of peeling to be bothered to dance.

Good times all around. Purina Farms is one of four (literally, four) free petting zoos within an hour of our house. Did I mention that St. Louis is great?

Pumpkins!

Our ward's playgroup this week was at a pumpkin farm! All of Luke's jeans were dirty when I went hunting for clothes for him this morning, so as soon as I saw his overalls, the kid was doomed.

Yes. I'm that mom. The one that dresses the baby up like a farmer to go to the pumpkin patch. (I kind of have to when the kid is this cute.)

Nailed it.
Luke's words this week have been big ("BEEEEEG!") and tiny (super high-pitched: "ty-yee!"), so you can imagine his delight at seeing pumpkins as big as himself right next to a crate of miniature ones. You can hear him talking about it here if you listen closely (he says pumpkin "pohn").

I think I'll just put up a bunch more pictures and leave you to it. The farm had all kinds of things to crawl on and catch tetanus from and get stuck in and generally have a good time. Luke's only injury was a head-bonk and bloody lip from a misplaced step near the top of the slide, which I considered pretty good for the day. Well, that and I accidentally locked him in the car while we were trying to leave. Mom of the year, I'm telling you.  (I changed his diaper on the front seat before getting him buckled in, and I didn't realize that he kicked the lock button on the door in the process.) In the end, he was pretty sweaty and upset with me, but also excited that he got to see a fire truck since we had to call 911 to bust him out. A little too much adventure in one day for me, I'll tell you that.

With his buddy Brian

He was mesmerized by the windmill. He kept
pointing to it and saying, "WEEEW! KY!"
("Wheel! Sky!")

Devilishly handsome. (Also, I'm glad I got this picture before the Slide
Incident, since that's the side of his head that we'll call Scarface for
the next week or two. Poor kid.)

Still got a bit of strawberry blond left.

One of Luke's favorite things in the world is to dig in the dirt (/sand
/gravel) and make little piles of it in places where dirt (/sand/gravel)
do not belong...like, say, inside the gears of this antique tractor.

Arguably Luke's favorite part. I tried explaining to him that it was an
old-fashioned fire truck, but I don't think he believed me about the fire
part. He just kept calling it "ohd chruk."

"You mean I can SIT? in this BEEEG CHRUK? Are you SERIOUS?" (You
would think he'd just met the president or something.)

Smart thinking, boys. Nothing like teamwork to drive the truck when
neither of you is even 3 feet tall.

Apparently either Heath was doing it wrong, or Luke decided he was
ready to go solo. (Me, internally: "Luke is being assertive?! YAY!")

They had to discuss the engineering plans for this pipeline for a good
ten minutes. (Well, either that or Heath was teaching Luke about
eating dirt...Luke's face afterward kind of gave him away.)

Another big tractor that I had to finally tear him away from. I swear I
didn't teach this kid to be a boy.

It's hard to see, but he's grinning like he just won a year's supply of
cheese sticks.

Luke has no concept of shopping. At the grocery
store, he can never figure out why I won't let him eat
the cereal or crackers in our cart. He similarly didn't
seem to get that we could take a pumpkin home with
us if he found one he liked. I tried to pick one for him,
but he declared that they were all "choo HAYEE"
(too heavy).

He did like this one since it had a "hahow" (handle),
but when I asked him if he wanted to take it home,
he said "naaaaw." (Can you see the line from his
temple to his chin where the swingset/slide
bit him? I think he'll survive.)

Perfect weather for a fun day. I love fall.

Chicago! Part 1

So, so sorry it's been so long since I've posted! I think we lost the camera for a little while after we moved, and he's a lot harder to take pictures of now that he's walking (/running/climbing) all over the place. Anyway.

We decided to take a little trip up to Chicago for the weekend a couple of weeks ago. It had been a super crazy month for Scott, and it was just a nice break for all of us from the heat of the summer & the work of moving. Neither of us had been to Chicago before and it's only 5 hours from St. Louis, so it's perfect for a little 3-day-weekend kind of vacation. It ended up that taking the train wasn't significantly more expensive or slower than driving, so we thought we'd try it just for fun.

So happy to be riding the train!

Heading out of STL, not too long after sunrise

Watching the barges on the Mississippi

Piggy jammed his mouth full so he could make a grab for the camera

After dropping our bags off at the hotel and trying to see if we could get Luke to take another little nap (no such luck), one of our first stops in Chicago was a nice long walk over to Millennium Park to get all of our wiggles out.

Looking straight up from underneath The Bean--can you see me?

Check out that skyline!

Luke was far more interested in the birds and sticks and dirt than the landmarks, of course. (He's not normally that wobbly when he walks now--he's limping a little bit in the video because he rolled his ankle getting off the tall bed in our hotel room. He was right as rain by the next day.)

More fun Chicago pics to come!

Excuses excuses

So, we moved and I lost the camera for a while and then the memory card broke and Luke is walking now so he's a lot more work to chase around and we were gone for a month and and and. SO sorry for the dry spell on the pictures! We're all alive and well (other than wilting in the heat) and the little monster is as cute as ever.

I know this is kind of cheating, but I just put up a bunch of old (plus a few newish) pictures on Facebook, so here's that link: Luke and Gloria (and friends)

Miss you all! More pics eventually, pinky swear.

Little Man!

Oh my goodness, how time flies! Forget a pause button for life--I need rewind! Luke is so big and smart these days that we can't even really call him a baby anymore. He's such a darling little boy. I keep kicking myself that I'm not recording more milestones. Am I a bad mom if I cram everything from the last 2 1/2 months into one post here? Obviously not all of this developed overnight--I'm just too busy chasing him around to remember what happened when, I think!

Okay, walking. Luke took his first real independent steps on a Saturday morning in April...I'm no good with dates, so I'll have to ask Scott for what day it was. I think Scott and I were getting dressed for the day, and Luke decided to walk from dad to mom all of a sudden across the area rug in our room. It was six or seven steps, and all three of us were quite surprised! He basically refused to replicate the feat for more than a couple of hesitant steps at a time until we moved to a new apartment with carpet. (I think he's a bit of a scaredy cat and didn't like falling on the hardwood floors.) Now he's a walking pro--he likes to do laps up and down the little hallway between the living room and the kitchen. It's probably only 10 yards or so, but it takes him something like 35 bouncy little steps to cross the whole distance. He looks like he's walking on the deck of a ship or something. It's so funny to me.

Luke is a little chatterbox. He's constantly talking about the things he sees or asking you what something new is called. He has a knack for picking up words...like today, we were hanging pictures up in his room (we've finally gotten unpacked enough that I've started hanging things on the walls. Yay!) and he asked me what a nail was (well, pointing to the nail in my mouth, he shouted at me, "a daaat??"). I showed him the one I was using and named it 2 or 3 times, and then handed him one (a stubby, dull nail...no eyeballs were damaged in the learning of this word) to look at while I finished hanging the picture I was working on. Well, I went to hang up the next picture and was awkwardly marking the place on the wall with my finger where I wanted the hole, when I realized that I hadn't picked up another nail. I turned to Luke and said, "Luke, will you hand me a nail?" He put down the toy he was playing with, looked up at me, looked around for where he had dropped the nail, found it, and picked it up. I said, "Yes! That's right, a nail! Will you hand it to me please?" and held out my hand, and he brought it to me and handed it over so I could hang the picture. I was so proud! Such a smart little boy!

It's silly, I know, but I want to make a list of the things he can say because I think it's so stinking cute and I want to remember all of his poorly pronounced little words.

ball ("ba" or, if he's showing off, "bahhww")
basketball (new one this week! "ba bap bahhwww")
star ("taw")
duck ("daht")
dog ("roo roo"--he's trying to say "ruff ruff")
bear ("beew")
light ("yaiii")
what's that? ("eyyzhdahh?" or, lately, "a daa?")
apple ("appw" or, if we try to force him to enunciate, "bap buh")
bread ("beh")
banana ("nana")
orange (it's hard to get him to say this, but I've heard it a few times--"ohwwwwdg")
cheese ("tees" or if he's really excited, just "ts")
water ("wahhw")

mama ("mamamamama")
dad ("dat" or "datiiit")
book ("bu guh"--I think I've probably been overemphasizing the k in this word...)
shoes ("sssyew")
hat ("a")
eyes ("eis" said with a lisp)
glasses ("gyaaaah")
leg ("yeg")

fan ("aaaa"--as you might imagine, it's hard to tell when he's talking about a fan and when he's just yelling, which is too bad since he loves fans. It means he yells a lot)
bath ("ba")

New ones since we moved to our two-story apartment:
stairs ("steh")
upstairs ("ah seh")
downstairs ("da steh")
outside ("ah siiiiiiie!!")

And things that he doesn't have words for, just sounds:
car (blows raspberries)
hot (blows air)
elephant ("bvooo")
monkey ("oo oo")
anything he thinks is cute--cats, flowers, bears, tiny logos (?), pictures of himself ("awww" and he snuggles his head into it)
after eating or drinking something he finds refreshing ("aaah"--you know, like a soda commercial)

This kid is addicted to books. Books are the last thing he sees before we turn off the light for every nap and bedtime, and they're the first thing he screams for when he wakes up. If we leave books on the nightstand too close to his crib, he reaches through the crib rails and knocks them to the floor trying to pick them up. He's convinced he can read, I think, because he demands his own hymnal every time there's a song in church and he screams if we try to turn the pages for him. He has 4 or 5 tub books, too, because heaven forbid he's expected to stay in one place for half a minute and be separated from a book. If we're reading a book and he points to something on the page and we don't name it or explain what it is, he screams and/or arches his back in a full-blown tantrum. He actually smacked his head in the tub tonight doing just that because I put down one of his tub books that we had been reading so I could scrub his grimy knees...little stinker. It wasn't even good enough when we discovered that the plastic book stuck to the wall of the tub--he pulled it off and shoved it in my hands and demanded that I keep reading until it was finished.

So basically I think he can identify so many things because he gets a lot of practice from us reading the same books over and over again. I mean, we own probably 30 or 40 board books (thank you, D.I. and grandmas!) and until we moved last week, we would check out 20 books at a time for Luke (10 from the city library and 10 from the county library--more variety for mom and dad that way) and he would get sick of them all before they were due back. (We won't say how sick of them mom and dad get.) I think we have a little nerd in the making. He hardly wants to walk, but he can't get enough books or enough new words. Here are things he's good at identifying, but he doesn't name yet:

nose
mouth
ears
eyebrows (he learned this one because he has a little plastic Pooh that plays music, and its eyebrows are pretty prominent. He got them mixed up for eyes once, so we practiced the difference between eyes and eyebrows for a couple of minutes and he hasn't forgotten it since.)
teeth
toes
arm
hand (this one is very new & he's still only got it once in a while)
foot
tummy
belly button
Big Bird
Elmo
giraffe
lion
cat
zebra
fish (about half the time)
horse
cow
pig
rooster
chicken
strawberries
lemon
blueberries
tractor
wheel
truck
fire truck
moon
sunshine
light switch

He's getting pretty good at following instructions and doing toddler kinds of things, too.

walk
hold my hand
go get it
go get [object he knows, like shoes]
throw it
bring it here
give it to me
sit down
be soft
don't touch
hot (blows on it)
no biting (well, he stops biting, but he throws himself to the ground in a tantrum)
good job
wait
okay
give me a kiss (open-mouthed, and sometimes you'll even get some tongue action)
clapping
peek-a-boo with a blanket (I'm dying to get this on video sometime...it's so stinking cute)
"reading" books (if we're not reading to him enough at the moment, he'll find a book, open it on his lap, turn the pages & point to stuff)
brush teeth (he knows what it means but he can't do it himself)
tries to feed you
play tricks (like offer to share a piece of food but take it away and laugh when you move toward it)
use a fork (still wobbly on this, but getting better every day!)
put a lid on things (needs help snapping/twisting it down)
pointing (at EVERYTHING. Constantly. Holy cow.)
dancing
containers--taking stuff in & out
wave bye--just a cute little open and closed fist, no flapping (he waves hi, too, especially at himself in the mirror)
helps get dressed (he knows "arms up!" to take off a shirt and he'll hold onto your arms and step into his shorts)
kisses & hugs all the time...he's so affectionate when he's not screaming.
ring stacker--he has a wooden ring stacker from Ikea that he's just mastered in the last couple of weeks. It's pretty tricky since the post is covered in this grippy rubber stuff, so the rings don't slide on.
keys--he tries to unlock the screws that hold the doorknob on, since that's as high as he can reach. It's pretty adorable.
makes mom talk on the phone--he'll find my phone and slam it into the side of my head when I'm not looking
gets jokes--like he gets that it's funny if you put a random object on your head and call it a hat
climbs "mountains"--if we're sitting or lying on the floor, it's a perfect excuse for him to master an obstacle course
scribbles with pen-shaped objects--I have hidden all of the crayons in the house and am numbering my days until he learns how to take the lid off a marker. How long do you have to wait until kids learn you only color on paper, and not the table?
kicks a ball (supported, until today!)
asks for the light to be turned on after a nap
teeth baring--so tonight Luke was asking about teeth, so Scott bared his teeth at Luke. The poor kid burst into tears and cowered into my shoulder. He was literally shaking! Isn't there some thing where primates show dominance by baring their teeth? It was pretty funny...
play chase--he loves to crawl away screaming if you chase him, but he keeps looking back and waiting for you to catch him.
binky--So I actually feel like a heartless mother because his binkies are his loveys--just recently he's decided he likes stuffed animals, but he doesn't snuggle them to sleep. Instead he needs a minimum of 4 binkies (but usually more like 7) scattered around the crib, which he holds onto while he falls asleep. If he's having a hard time sleeping, you can hear him on the monitor shaking the binkies so that the little hooks clack. You would think he has a word for these, wouldn't you? I haven't figured out what it is yet!

Anyway, this is getting ridiculously long and I'm sorry there's not more pictures. I will post some more soon!

Tiny Dancer

The Ben & Jerry's near our house does a 3-scoops-for-3-dollars deal before 5pm on weekdays, so one day when dad got home from work early, we went on a walk to check it out. Luke didn't get his own whole scoop, but he did get a few tastes.

Watching mom & dad like a hawk. "Where's mine??"

I swear I don't know why his face looks orange
around his mouth whenever the camera uses a flash.

Saw the camera. "More please!"

In unrelated news, Luke has discovered how to turn on the radio. He dances to it and, well, it's pretty stinking cute.

He gets mad when he turns it on and there's commercials on the radio. He yells at the stereo and then comes and gets me to fix it.

Luke's Girlfriend

Maybe Gloria doesn't think it's official, but Luke sure does. He is besotted with beautiful miss Gloria. She's older and wiser and she can WALK (holy cow!). Here they are at Home Depot (already picking out housewares??).

They got to go on a little chariot ride to the park the other day. There were a couple of moments of palm-to-face over the froggy toy or something, but in general it was quite the romantic afternoon.

Ready to roll! I think Gloria's trying to shoo off the paparazzi.

Swingin'. They're MARRIED! (remember that from elementary school?)

Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of their darling antics on the slide/playground/etc., because I couldn't chase two kids and take pictures at the same time. Much easier to manage a camera when they're both immobile.

Mom's view from above. I love the look on Luke's face.

We stopped at the dog park on the way home for the kiddos to watch
the doggies. (Don't they look like they're at the drive-in?)

Such sweeties!

I don't have the camera card with me right now, but I will have to upload pictures of their trip to the zoo soon!
