Gone Fishin'

Luke's Great-Grandpa Weaver is entering advanced-stage kidney failure this week and will probably soon be joining Great-Grandma Weaver on the other side. So that they could spend some more time with him, Luke and his cousin Simon and a few other grandkids got to go fishing on Friday with Grandpa Weaver at the Payson trout farm!

Grandpa and Uncle Gary were the winners of the day--SIX fish!

Sometimes babies need a break from all that hard work for lunch...

Thanks for the fishing trip, Grandpa!

2 Months Old

Official stats are in from Doc Bentley:

Date: 05/25/11
Age: 2.0 months
Weight: 12 lbs 3 oz (63rd percentile)
Height: 24.0 in (86th percentile)
Head circumference: 15.7 in (50th percentile)

So looks like he's tall & skinny, with a very, very average-sized head. Still growing like a weed! Doctor says he's super healthy (he still hasn't gotten sick yet--knock on wood!) & doing just what he's supposed to be doing. Poor baby screamed his head off after his shots (to be expected), but after a good little cry he settled down fine. Poor kiddo. He didn't seem to resent us for it--I don't think he made any kind of a connection there--but he sure was mad! He seemed achy & cranky for about the next day and a half, but nothing that the magic grape Tylenol couldn't fix. Such a trooper.

Little Luke boy still seems to love going on walks & being outside. He gets this adorable look on his face like "woah!" when he rides in the stroller.

Giraffe riding co-pilot

Speaking of adorable, have I posted any pictures of his church clothes?

So dapper!

It seems like he's growing & changing all the time and just getting cuter every day. For a little while I was sad that my tiny, perfect newborn disappeared, but this bigger, perfect 2-month-old is even better!

Bonus video time: Having a little chat with mom. (I have to kind of hide the camera from him, because whenever I try to film him talking, he stares at the camera and quiets down.) It's long!

Excuse This House

More photos coming soon, I promise! I just wanted to pause for a shoutout to Scott for being so awesome the last couple of weeks. For 6 weeks after Luke was born, I got to stay home and be a full-time mom and not even think about work. Bliss. Scott, meanwhile, was plowing full-steam-ahead on his thesis work/RA work for his advisor. Now that I'm back to working full-time (only 12 work days to go! But who's counting, right?), he's a stay-at-home dad, but his school workload is still going. He's got double-duty to worry about. We're tag-teaming it these days: I feed/change the baby during the night & get ready for work at 6AM, Scott's on baby duty until I get home between 4 and 5, we have dinner or a snack together, and then he goes in to work from about 6PM until 1 or 2AM. We both nap when we can and sleep like crazy on the weekends we're home, but I know we'll heave a big sigh of relief come the second week of June when we'll both be done with work. I don't know how two-income families do it. Daycare, I guess.

I have to confess that I've always felt like the church's encouragement for women to stay home seemed a little...I don't know, limiting? Condescending? But after just 2 months of parenthood, I can completely see why. It just makes sense for one person to be at home--and at least when there's a baby on the breast, it logically needs to be mom. Historically, that was taken as a matter-of-course, but I think that the cultural mindset now is that a household can still run perfectly smoothly without that full-time home figure thanks to our modern advances. Not so. (I swear it's even harder now, thanks to the frenetic pace we all live in.) It's mind-boggling how much of a time suck the little darling is. Even now, two months down the line, I can't figure out how running a house and taking care of one little pooper can be a full-time job, but it is. I guess if you sit down to count the hours it takes every week just to keep a house livable (laundry, dishes, scrubbing, sweeping, paying bills, grocery shopping, running errands, fix-it jobs, returning calls, cooking, sorting, even just putting the TV remotes away for the hundredth time) and add a baby to the equation, it shouldn't be surprising, but it is. Little Luke is like a black hole: Everything close to him gets sucked in. Your entire day home with the baby revolves around his (still almost completely erratic) schedule, even though said schedule is a pretty unimpressive jumble of eating, sleeping, pooping, looking around, fussing, eating, and sleeping again. Scott and I both feel like we need to apologize to each other on the days we're not at work and the other one comes home to a less-than-sparkling house, but when you stop and think about it, it's an accomplishment just to have kept the kid alive another day. I saw a comment today on a friend's blog that said it better than I can:

Yes, what people generally don’t get is the safety hazard babies and toddlers are to themselves–stairs, doors, street, falling anywhere, anytime, poking fingers into sockets, putting ANYTHING into the mouth… they’re consumed with being themselves, which is innocently hazardous to their own health. So while it looks like a mom-at-home does “nothing,” the fact that the young ones survive to see the sun rise the next day is a wonderful accomplishment, service and credit to humanity.

I guess there's no shocking revelation going on here; I grew up reading a saying my mom had on the wall about how it's okay the house is messy, because the kids came first (something like this, I think). It always seemed a little cheesy to me, but today it's comforting to remember that other people think it's okay that I didn't get the laundry done because I was snuggling my boy.

Duckies

Dad's hollering from the other room that it's the poopocalypse. One of these days I'm going to photograph one of the diaper bombs this kid makes just to show it off to his future prom date or something.

In the meantime, here's an indulgent string of just adorable photos.  One of my favorite outfits he's got is a fleece sleep sack with rubber duckies printed on it--there's a little badge on it that says "squeeze me." How can you not??

(I'm sure it's going to mess up the blog layout a little to have these weird-shaped pictures, but Picasa's got this awesome new collage tool and the latent scrapbooker in me is going nuts.)

Just chillin' with daddy

So curious!

Where is that hand thing that's so good to suck on?

Oh, there it is.

Just makin' faces

We have been learning about our tongue this week.

Chunky Monkey

Oh my goodness, I am SO backlogged on posting! I have 11 posts I need to finish...sorry if things get out of order for the next little while. I've been back at work for two weeks now, so I guess it's fitting that it's been two weeks since I posted! Hopefully I can get everything caught up this weekend.

I think the most heartbreaking thing about going back to work for me has been seeing just how FAST this little boy is growing! It's like I blink and we've gone up a diaper size. He's hitting all these milestones at home with Scott--I'm so glad Dad is there to be together with him. The two of them are best buds. I won't lie and say I'm not jealous!

This little chunker is such a cutie. I weighed him with our (wildly inaccurate, I'm sure) bathroom scale about a week and a half ago and it said he's up to 12 pounds. We could tell for a while that he was getting too big for his newborn clothes, but we didn't really start retiring them until last week...they're just so cute! I'll have to post a fashion show with all of my favorites sometime. We've been pulling out his 3-month clothes this week, and they almost fit him! Yikes! He turns exactly 8 weeks today. Hopefully we can keep him in these outfits for at least a little while.

Showing off the big boy clothes

Check out that gut hanging over!

I think the first tip-off that he'd really done some serious growing was trying to get him into his carseat one day:

It's a little snug, mom!

Depending on the angle you catch him at, his face is looking REALLY chubby sometimes.

Gotta love that double chin.

We finally had to graduate from 0-3 month to 3-6 month onesies. (When clothes are stretched tight enough to be see-through, it's time to go up a size, I think.)

I'll have to post an "After" picture with the 3-6 month onesies for comparison.

It's so funny to see how he's even chubbier after he eats--his cute little belly gets giant!

The horizontal stripes aren't exactly slimming, buddy...

Winking for the camera!

Goin' For a Ride

Baby boy LOVES to be carried tummy-to-tummy. We started out with this black carrier that works great (Scott loves it, too):

All you can see is his tiger hat :)
But I read some scare stories online about how kids consistently carried in those "crotch danglers" for long periods of time can develop joint problems (like hip dysplasia) and I started looking at other styles. Everyone online kept raving about "ring slings": how comfortable they are to wear, how versatile, and--bonus!--you can nurse in them! That's the kicker that got me to order one in the end. I'd been saying for weeks that I would be able to get so much more done at home if I could just duct tape the kid to myself while he ate.

MUCH cuter than duct tape. (Why do I never put on makeup anymore?)

Sleepyhead

Luke is such a fan of the ring sling that it's hard to keep him awake in it. He just hunkers right down as soon as he's inside and conks out until we take him out again. I think he likes how tightly it holds him. We've gone on lots of walks now (and to church, etc.) with him in the sling and he always sleeps the whole time. When he's at his fussiest at home, it's an easy way to soothe him to sleep, too.

Little bug! (It's like my chest got pregnant this time.)

Still haven't mastered the art of feeding him in the sling yet, but it's working great as mode of transportation and nap inducer. I think the monkey is a fan.

Playdates

So I'm getting a little backlogged here--I still have a bunch of older stuff to post, but these are so cute I had to get them up.

Friday was a big, busy day for little Luke. In the morning, he and Savannah got to go hang out at Olive Garden and Red Butte Gardens with their moms.

Savannah was squinty in the sun, not crabby. She was a doll!
Luke got to ride in his black carrier. He likes it, apparently--he slept the ENTIRE time. It was really easy to keep him warm enough that way. (It was SO cold, despite being the second-to-last day of April. It snowed the night before!)

Savannah got to ride in the stroller for most of the day so she wouldn't get run over by the crazy first graders running around. Here, she found a book she recognized in the learning center (we ducked in for a few minutes to warm up).
Tag-teaming it with the kiddos. Luke got to ride with Allie for a while.  (We wondered how many people we could confuse with this photo...mom swap!)

As if that wasn't enough fun for one day, Luke and Simon had a playdate on Friday night, too!

In the car on the way to Simon's house, thinking about all the fun things they're going to do together.  (His white-noise giraffe is in the foreground. Super handy for long car trips.)

Look at these handsome devils in blue!

Hangin' out with Simon's grandma, Lisa, and watching Simon like a hawk.

Simon watched Luke right back.

Already plotting big pranks, probably!

They were both mesmerized by each other. It seemed like they kept trying to talk. Poor babies.

We tried to see if they would like some tummy time together, since they'd both be at the same eye level...

...but it quickly dissolved into a giant-head-bobbing session with many squawks of frustration.

Simon loves to hang by his tummy.

...Luke, not so much. (How funny is it that both boys are in blue & both moms are in pink?)

Scott says "playdate" isn't very manly for our little boys, but "mandate" doesn't have quite the same effect. I guess we'll say they...collaborated on feats of awesomeness.

Best buds forever!

Bonus video time!
